Ramgarh violence victims - silence in Khagrachhari

A local lawmaker on Monday assured the victims of Sunday’s violence in Ramgarh of Khagrachhari of “sufficient” compensation and rehabilitation hours after the district administration formed a three-member committee to probe the incident.
Lawmaker Jatindra Lal Tripura gave the assurance while visiting Shankhola Para where three people were killed, 30 injured and 35 houses were burnt over a land dispute between indigenous people and Bangalee settlers the previous day.
An eerie silence is prevailing in Ramgarh upazila following the violence, reports our Khagrachhari correspondent.
Deputy Inspector General of Police of Chittagong Range Md Nawsher Ali accompanied Tripura. They reached the spot at about 11:15am.
Calling upon the locals to improve the communal harmony to restore peace in the area, the local lawmaker pledged trial for the people involved in the violence.
They held a public meeting on Jaliapara Government Primary School premises in the afternoon.
Mainly the Bangalee settlers attended the meeting that began at about 2:15pm and continued till 3:30pm. A few Marma leaders also attended the programme.
Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anisul Haque Bhuiyan, Superintendent of Police Abu Kalam Siddique, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Chittagong division Maj General Ashab Uddin, local leader Congeri Marma, Ramgarh upazila chairman Belayed Hossain Bhuiyan also took part in the meeting.
Meanwhile, the Khagrachhari DC Sunday night formed a three-member committee with Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Mohammad Salahuddin as the chief.
The committee has been asked to submit its report in two working days.
Other members of the committee are: Additional Superintendent of Police in Khagrachhari Delwar Hossain Sayedee and Ramgarh Upazila Nirbahi Officer Gopal Chandra Das.
The Section 144 clapped soon after the incident in both Ramgarh and Manikchhari upazilas is still in force.
